Stopes was born in Edinburgh in 1980; she was the daughter of atomic number 1 Stopes and Charlotte Carmichael. She only received a certificate and non a degree as she was not allowed to attend the lectures, but was able to take the exams. Her university experience dark her into a passionate feminist. At the age of eighteen, Stopes won a scholarship for skill at the university college in London, where she achieved a double first in botany in 1901. She continued her studies until 1905 where she became Britain’s youngest doctor in science. She was also interested in politics and like her mother she supported wo hands’s suffrage and eventually joined the Women’s Freedom League. Luckily she never got arrested and sent to prison for her beliefs.
In 1911 Stopes married Reginald Gates, but soon after the hymeneals was annulled for non-consummating in 1916, as Gates believed that a women’s amaze was in the home and disliked Stopes involvement in the Women’s Freedom League.
